From laughter to tears, the press conferences on day one of Wimbledon had a little bit of everything.

If you spend enough time at tennis tournaments you realise that players have a certain way with words. With that in mind, the Tennismash team hung around the Wimbledon interview rooms to grab the best quotes from a busy day of press conferences.

“Lots of people are saying, Oh, you know, very tough draw for Svitolina. You know now they can, Shhh [smiling]” – Elina Svitolina proved the Wimbledon doubters wrong against Ash Barty.

“He asked me if I had any advice for him.
I said, Try not to serve 20 double-faults.
Then he said to me just before he went on, he said, Yeah, thanks for the advice about not serving 20 double-faults.
I said, You served a few.
He said, Yeah, I think I’m only on about 10 right now.
I said, Well, there’s still time to get to 20.”
– Andy Murray gave his opponent Alexander Bublik some solid advice during a rain delay in their first round match.

“I had some problem with the knee since Queen’s, so was not the way I wanted to get ready for this tournament.” – Stan Wawrinka reflects on his defeat to Daniil Medvedev.

“There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating,” Williams said. “And… yeah. I’m completely speechless. – Venus Williams breaks down during her press conference.

“I happy because I didn’t win a lot of matches last couple of years here in Wimbledon. Today I win one, and I am looking forward to play the second one.” – Rafa Nadal is up and running at Wimbledon.

“I’m obviously a little bit scared, obviously. But I don’t think I need it at the moment.”Nick Kyrgios reflects on the need to have surgery on his hip.

“They are better, and they win because they are better.” – Jo-Wilfried Tsonga explains why the Big Four keep winning.

“Funny enough, I was okay all night and all morning. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m fine’. I stepped on the court and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so nervous’.” – Madison Keys had butterflies before her win over Nao Hibino.

“That’s just how I play. That has nothing to do with trying to be exciting or flashy or any of that. That’s my tennis.” – being a showman comes naturally to Dustin Brown.

“This is only Grand Slam that I haven’t done well in. Yeah, never made quarterfinals. That’s always my motivation, to go second week.” – Kei Nishikori is off to a flying start at Wimbledon.
