Tense handshake between Cornet and Kerber

Alize Cornet playing a match filled with drama? Surely not …

The scene: the Frenchwoman’s second-round match at the China Open in Beijing against 10th seed Angelique Kerber.

Having won the first set, Cornet dumped a simple volley into the net to surrender serve in the fifth game of the second set. She melted down, swatting away a ball, kicking it for good measure, and screaming and gesticulating at her coach in French.

She was reported to have said: “this is all your fault!”

Somehow, she calmed herself down after an emotional changeover, winning four of the next five games to complete an upset 6-4 6-4 victory.

Kerber had watched intently as Cornet’s outburst unfolded, and was apparently unhappy about it; she gave Cornet a serve at the net following their handshake.

Although the audio is hard to hear in its entirety, it sounded as if the German said it was “not fair” how Cornet behaved toward her coach.

Cornet defended herself: “Tell me Angie (what I did wrong) … I got pissed once! We all get pissed.”

Cornet, the world No.37, next goes on to face either Caroline Garcia or Elise Mertens in the last 16.

Cornet v Garcia? Perhaps we’ll have some more drama.
