Venus Williams has broken down in press following her straight sets win over Elise Mertens at Wimbledon. The American was speaking to the media for the first time since news broke of a lawsuit involving Williams following a fatal car crash in Flordia.
Asked for her thoughts about the incident, Williams attempted to answer before becoming visibly disturbed.
“There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating,” Williams said. “And… yeah. I’m completely speechless. It’s just… yeah, I mean, I’m just…”

Visibly distressed, the American requested to leave the press room for a short period to compose herself. When she did return, she faced a couple of further questions about her match before leaving the room.

It was a difficult end to a positive performance for the five-time Wimbledon champion. The world No.11 needed one hour 40 minutes to down a dogged Elise Mertens 7-6(7) 6-4 during a rain disrupted first round match.
Williams will face China’s Wang Qiang in the second round.
