Alexander Zverev needs three sets to beat wildcard Yannick Hanfmann in his opening match in Munich, while Petra Kvitova enjoys another quick win in Prague.

Alexander Zverev began the defence of his Munich Open title with a hard-fought win over fellow German Yannick Hanfmann.

The top seed and world No.3 came back to win 6-7(12) 6-4 6-2 after losing a gripping first-set tiebreaker against the world No.118.

“I am always happy to get a win like that,” Zverev told atpworldtour.com.

“Obviously he played one of the best matches of his life today, so I wish him all the best and I hope he is going to continue playing like this in the next few weeks.”

Zverev goes on to face another German, Jan-Lennard Struff, in round three.

Fourth seed Hyeon Chung of South Korea beat German wildcard Matthias Bachinger 6-1 6-1 and next faces Slovakian qualifier Martin Klizan.

In Portugal, third seed Kyle Edmund of Great Britain saw off Australian rising star Alex de Minaur 6-2 7-5, while American Frances Tiafoe knocked out fourth seed Gilles Muller 6-4 7-5.

The leading names continued to fall at the Istanbul Open, where third seed Andreas Seppi, fourth seed Aljaz Bedene and sixth seed Viktor Troicki all went out in round two.

ANALYSIS: Does Djokovic just need more match play?

Petra Kvitova continues to make smooth progress on her debut at the Prague Open, seeing off Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva in round two.

The Czech won 6-3 6-1 in 56 minutes and will face Czech Katerina Siniakova or Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarterfinals.

In Rabat, Belgian top seed Elise Mertens reached the last eight after Laura Siegemund retired when trailing 3-1 in the final set of their second-round match.
