In her seventh final in 2017, Caroline Wozniacki finally broke through to win her first title of the season at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Facing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Wozniacki was unusually aggressive in a 6-0 7-5 win, defending her title in the Japanese capital.
“It was my seventh final of the year and obviously after a while it gets harder and harder to get that last one,” Wozniacki said.
“But I went out there and I just stayed focused and stayed aggressive, especially in the beginning and then it was going my way.”
Incredibly, Wozniacki had built a run of 16 straight games in Tokyo before Pavlyuchenkova got on the board in the second game of the second set.
In her semifinal victory over world No.1 Garbine Muguruza, the Dane won nine straight games to complete a 6-2 6-0 thrashing, and then seven more against Pavlyuchenkova before the Russian stopped the rot.
“I really enjoy playing here in Tokyo,” Wozniacki said. “The court suits my game well and I feel good having won the title this year again.”

Her near-flawless display featured six aces, 16 winners and just three unforced errors.
It was her third victory in Tokyo, her 21st hardcourt title, and 26th WTA crown overall.
After losing finals in Doha, Dubai, Miami, Eastbourne, Bastad and Toronto, Wozniacki ensured she’d complete an 10th consecutive season with at least one WTA title.
