Caroline Wozniacki dropped just two games in a semifinal beat-down of world No.1 Garbine Muguruza to reach her seventh final of 2017 in Tokyo.

Caroline Wozniacki stunned Garbine Muguruza for the loss of just two games on Saturday in Tokyo to reach her seventh WTA final of the year.

Wozniacki beat the world No.1 6-2 6-0 to set up a final against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat the resurgent Angelique Kerber 6-0 6-7(4) 6-4.

“There are some tournaments where you just feel good and do well almost every year and, for me, this is one of them,” Wozniacki said after the 60-minute victory. “I thought I played a good match today.”

Muguruza said she lacked freshness and struggled in the long rallies.

“I felt my energy was a little bit low, but I think she just had a good match. I didn’t make the important shots in the important moments so the match went to her side very fast,” she said.

Wozniacki is an unenviable 0-6 in WTA finals in 2017, and will hope to turn the tables when she faces Russia’s Pavlyuchenkova, who admitted her surprise to be in the final.

After leading Kerber 6-0 5-2, she suddenly found herself down 0-3 in the third before recovering.

“I was already thinking about going to Wuhan. In my head, I was booking flights. But at the same time, I always fighting to the last point,” she said.

“I actually didn’t expect I would start so good today and I was playing really good tennis.”

Ostapenko into Seoul final

Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko is through to her first final since her French Open breakthrough after coming through an entertaining battle with Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum.

The top seed beat the qualifier 3-6 6-1 6-3 and will take on Beatriz Haddad Maia – who beat Richel Hogenkamp in straight sets – for a shot at her second title of the season.

“I’m feeling great, and I’m playing pretty good this week,” said the world No.10, who trailed 0-3 in the deciding set.

“She was going for her shots, playing aggressive and I’m really happy I came back in the third set to win the match.”

Zhang wins on home soil

Second seed Zhang Shuai has taken the title at the Guangzhou International Women’s Open after beating Aleksandra Krunic in a three-set final.

The Chinese star won 6-2 3-6 6-2 to capture her second career WTA title – after winning in the same place in 2013.

Zhang was in sparkling form all week at the International-level event, dropping just three games to reach the semifinals and then beating Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets to advance to the final.

Fognini advances to St. Petersburg final

Italian Fabio Fognini saved two match points in a thrilling semifinal to overcome No.1 seed Roberto Bautista Agut and reach the final of the ATP indoor event in St. Petersburg, Russia.

After being blown off the court in the first set, Fognini won 2-6 7-6(7) 7-6(5) to reach his second ATP final of the year.

There he’ll play Bosnian Damir Dzumhur, a 6-3 7-5 winner over No.8 seed Jan-Lennard Struff.

“It was a really tough match at the beginning,” said Fognini. “He was playing really fast and really solid at the same time. I’m really happy that I came back to win.”

Paire gunning for glory on home soil

Frenchman Benoit Paire will face a qualifier in the Metz final as he hopes to win his first ATP title in his homeland.

Paire snapped an eight-match losing streak in semifinals thanks to a 6-1 7-6(5) win over Nikoloz Basilashvili, and will face German Peter Gojowczyk in his first final since October 2015.

Gojowczyk overcame an injured Mischa Zverev to reach his first ATP final.
