Reports coming out of the US are saying that Serena Williams has had a baby girl. The news comes less than 24 hours after Williams reportedly went into labour in Florida.
While no official statement has come out of either the Williams camp or that of her fiance Alexis Ohanian, a number of prominent tennis players and insiders have tweeted or stated their congratulations.
Venus Williams was the first to set the rumour mill whirring when she told ESPN: “Obviously I’m super excited. Words can’t describe.”
Coach Patrick Mouratoglou then took to Twitter, saying: “Congratulations @SerenaWilliams for your baby girl. I am so happy for you and I feel your emotion. Btw … I wish you a speedy recovery… we have a lot of work ahead of us.”

“A baby girl? Well, I hope she doesn’t play tennis,” Garbine Muguruza smiled.

Stacey Allaster, chief of professional tennis at the USTA, also said: “Hey Serena, welcome to the best club in the world: motherhood. Can’t wait to see you, a mum, and your precious little healthy baby. Congrats!”
