The was frustration in rainy Washington DC, upsets and injuries in sunny Stanford, and the exit of the defending champ in Los Cabos – and yet the big names still mostly progressed.
A wrap of the happenings from around the globe in tennis on Tuesday.
Simona Halep, playing for the first time in Washington DC, kicked off her Citi Open campaign on a good note with a 7-6(3) 6-0 victory over wildcard Sloane Stephens, a former world No.11. Also advancing in Halep’s section were Rio Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig and former top 10 player Ekaterina Makarova, who set up a second-round meeting after straight-sets victories on Tuesday. The winner will likely meet Halep in the quarters, if the top seed can get past Mariana Duque-Marino.
In the rainy US capital, men’s matches were beset by delays – but when they were able to be played, eighth seed Jack Sock powered into the third round with a 7-6(2) 7-6(6) win over Marius Copil. Rounding out some remaining first-round matches were Marcos Baghdatis and Jordan Thompson, who each progressed in straight sets.
Later on Tuesday, top seeds Dominic Thiem and Kei Nishikori won through to the third round, as did Juan Martin del Potro, after the 13th seed beat Lukas Lacko 7-5 6-2. Del Potro now players Nishikori – who survived Donald Young in a third-set tiebreak – in a blockbuster clash in the last 16.
A few years ago at the Bank of the West Classic, a 16-year-old Naomi Osaka announced herself as a future star when she stunned Sam Stosur in the first round for her first top-20 win in her WTA main-draw debut. On Tuesday, Osaka found herself on the opposite side of a similar narrative when 18-year-old Caroline Dolehide of the United States thumped her 6-4 6-2 in her own WTA main-draw debut. Dolehide will next play third seed Madison Keys.

Also advancing on Tuesday were Americans CoCo Vandeweghe – the sixth seed moved past an injured Ajla Tomljanovic after winning the first set 6-2 – and Alison Riske, who beat Magda Linette 6-2 6-4.
Defending champion Ivo Karlovic is out of the tournament after suffering a straight-sets loss to qualifier Quentin Halys. The Frenchman, once the recipient of plentiful wildcards but who has recently been slugging his way through qualifying rounds, won his third straight match in Los Cabos to set up a second-round meeting with Bosnian Damir Dzumhur. Another winner was Bjorn Fratangelo, who beat Tatsuma Ito 6-4 6-4.
DID YOU SEE? Federer to return to Montreal
Seeds five through eight were all in action on Tuesday at the claycourt event in Austria, and only No.5 seed Robin Haase didn’t survive. Jan-Lennard Struff (6), Jiri Vesely (7) and Horacio Zeballos (8) all progressed – Zeballos saved four match points to beat Rogerio Dutra Silva 2-6 7-6(11) 7-6(4) – to the second round. Struff dealt veteran wildcard Tommy Haas another blow in the German’s farewell tour, winning 6-3 7-6(4)
