Roger Federer will commence his US Open preparation at the Montreal Masters, his first appearance in Quebec in six years.

Roger Federer will take the somewhat unusual step of contesting the Canadian Masters in the lead-up to the US Open.

Federer will make his first appearance in Montreal since 2011 and will play the tournament – which rotates between Montreal and Toronto each year – for just the second time in six years.

He last played the Canadian event in 2014, when it was staged in Toronto.

“I’m happy to be coming back to Montreal, as I have not had the chance to play there for many years,” the Swiss star said. “This 2017 season has been very exciting and I am really looking forward to being back out on the court on the ATP Tour.”

Federer has won two Grand Slam trophies this season among his five-title haul and has risen from 17th to third in the rankings.

He will turn 36 during his week in Montreal, before turning his attention to the Cincinnati Masters where he is a seven-time champion.

The US Open begins on 28 August in New York.
