The All England Club has announced its seedings for Wimbledon 2017, with the men’s draw following a unique grasscourt formula while the women’s have followed the WTA rankings.

Defending champion Andy Murray and 2016 finalist Angelique Kerber head the Wimbledon seedings for 2017.

The All England Club released its list of 32 players seeded in both the men’s and women’s singles draw, with one distinct difference between the two draws – the men’s seeds are sorted according to a grasscourt formula while the women’s seeds follow the WTA rankings.

Roger Federer, ranked fifth, is seeded third for this year’s championships, despite being ranked behind Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka, who are seeded fourth and fifth respectively.

World No.4 Novak Djokovic was elevated to second seeding.

“The seeds are the top 32 players on the ATP Ranking list, but then rearranged on a surface-based system,” the All England Club explained.

“The seeding order is determined using an objective and transparent system to reflect more accurately an individual player’s grasscourt achievements. It is based on giving additional credit for grasscourt performance in the two-year period immediately before the date used for seeding for The Championships.”

The formula is calculated thus:

  • ATP ranking points at 26 June 2017
  • Adding 100% of points earned for all grass court tournaments in the preceding past 12-month period
  • Adding 75% of points earned for the best grasscourt tournament in the 12 months prior to that

With that formula applied, here are the men’s seedings for Wimbledon 2017, accompanied by the women’s seeds (in ranking order):
