Birmingham marks just the second tournament back fro Kvitova, who returned to tennis at Roland Garros in late May after being the victim of a traumatic knife attack that severely damaged her playing hand.

In the last eight in Birmingham, Kvitova will take on either No.5 seed Kristina Mladenovic or China’s Zhang Shuai.

Also advancing on Wednesday were Aussies Daria Gavrilova and Ash Barty.

Both needed three sets; Gavrilova subdued Czech Katerina Siniakova 7-5 2-6 6-4 while Barty upset another Czech, No.8 seed Barbora Strycova, 6-3 3-6 6-1.
