The 100th-ranked Andreas Seppi beat eighth-seeded Federico Delbonis 7-6(7) 5-7 6-3 on Monday to advance to the second round of the inaugural European Open in Antwerp, Belgium.
The Italian player next takes on Dutchman Robin Haase, who had an easier time against Paul-Henri Mathieu of France with a 6-4 6-2 victory.
Also, Inigo Cervantes of Spain beat Germany’s Michael Berrer 6-1 3-6 6-1 at the 250-level indoor event.
Garcia advances in Luxembourg
Fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia was taken to three sets before beating Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6(2) 2-6 6-4 in the first round of the Luxembourg Open.
The Frenchwoman needed almost two and a half hours to beat Kontaveit, who at world No.121 is ranked 96 places below Garcia.
Wildcard Francesca Schiavone of Italy comfortably defeated fifth-seeded Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-2 6-2.
Monica Niculescu, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Varvara Lepchenko and Denisa Allertova also advanced.
Johnson sent packing
Radu Albot of Moldova has upset fifth-seeded Steve Johnson in straight sets in the first round of the Stockholm Open.
Albot held his serve throughout the match to defeat the American 6-3 6-4 on Monday.
Eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis also got an early exit as South Africa’s Kevin Anderson beat the Cypriot in three sets, 2-6 6-4 6-2.
In other first-round action, Adrian Mannarino of France beat Donald Young of the United States 7-5 6-4, and, in a battle between qualifiers, American Ryan Harrison defeated Adam Pavlasek of Czech Republic 6-3 7-5.
Top-seeded Gael Monfils and second-seeded Grigor Dimitrov enter the tournament later in the week.
