Cast you mind back a couple of weeks and you may remember that we asked three of the greatest tennis players ever to wield a racquet for a US Open preview and prediction. Yes, as part of the launch of the Laver Cup, Roger Federer, Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg all did their best to predict the Flushing Meadows winner.
Channelling the spirit of social media, we thought we’d bust out a #FlashbackFriday and see whether the greatest tennis players of all time could accurately predict the US Open winner.
Novak Djokovic: Runner-up (lost to Stan Wawrinka 6-7(1) 6-4 7-5 6-3
Andy Murray: Quarterfinals (lost to Kei Nishikori 1-6 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-5)
Serena Williams: Semifinals (lost to Karolina Pliskova 6-2 7-6(5)
Juan Martin del Potro: Quarterfinals (lost to Stan Wawrinka 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3 6-2
Dark horse – Kevin Anderson: Third round (list to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 6-4 7-6(4)

In conclusion… Roger Federer nailed it. This is what he had to say (at the time) about Stan:
“I always hope that Stan, when he catches fire again, that he can do some damage. He’s had a bit of a struggle of late, but that tells me that he’s going to be very refreshed and extremely hungry when the US Open rolls around.”
