Garbi gone: Sevastova sends Muguruza packing

Garbine Muguruza is the biggest name to fall in the women’s draw, upset on Wednesday night by Anastasija Sevastova.

The Latvian ousted the No.3 seed 7-5 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium to set up a third-round match with Kateryna Bondarenko in what is now a wide-open segment of the draw.

“I had to show myself what could be, I am so happy that it went well,” Sevastova said.

“I think this stage, Grand Slams, playing on the biggest stage, it cannot get bigger.

“It’s only one match, it’s still a long way to go.”

The 26-year-old Sevastova, who reached the fourth round at Australian Open 2011, retired in May 2013 because of a series of injuries, mostly to her back.

She will now face another player on the comeback trail, Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko, who came back to the tour in 2015 after having her first child.

Bondarenko earlier advanced to the third round with a tight 5-7 7-6(5) 7-5 victory over China’s Saisai Zheng.

If the seedings had held, Roland Garros champion Muguruza would have faced Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig in the last 32.

Muguruza served for the opening set at 5-4, yet failed to close it out, and rapidly fell behind 5-1 in the second set.

Sevastova nervously blew two match points in the seventh game, part of a mini comeback staged by Muguruza.

Yet the Spaniard sprayed errors in the final game, handing Sevastova a 0-40 lead.

She closed out the match with a winner.

Madison Keys is the highest seed remaining in Muguruza’s quarter of the draw, after the eighth seed beat fellow American Kayla Day 6-1 6-1.
