Czech Republic celebrated on Saturday after Petra Kvitova held off Madison Keys to win Olympic singles bronze.
In a big-hitting affair, Kvitova prevailed 7-5 2-6 6-2, becoming the first Czech since Jana Navotna 20 years prior to win an Olympic singles medal for Czech Republic.
The Czechs added another medal to their Olympic tennis tally when Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova overcame compatriots Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the women’s doubles bronze medal match.
Kvitova, who has slipped to world No.14 after ranking in the top 10 for much of the past five years, said the result was one of the best moments of her career.
“I’m still a bit emotional, so if I cry, sorry,” Kvitova said.
“It means almost everything, definitely. Having a medal from the Olympics is one of the best things to happen in my career definitely, along with the two Wimbledon titles and winning Fed Cups and WTA [Finals]
“I’m very proud that I could bring it to the Czech Republic.
“I had so many troubles with injuries, with the health and everything. I couldn’t really find the best tennis in me.
“I’m so happy that I saved my best tennis for this event.”
