Federer eyeing Cilic revenge

Marin Cilic’s brutal beating of Roger Federer at the US Open has the great Swiss eyeing revenge as he continues his pursuit for an eighth Wimbledon crown on Wednesday.

Federer and Cilic will clash in the first quarter-final on centre court and the 17-times major champion says he hasn’t forgotten his straight-sets semi-final mauling at the hands of the Croat in New York in 2014.

“Everything he touched went in,” Federer said.

“It was: ‘all right, here is a chance, boom. Maybe here is another chance, boom’.

“That’s kind of how it was for three straight sets.

“I didn’t play poorly in any way. It was just all on his racquet. It was very seldom that I was blown off the court like that.

“He brushed me off the court like I was nothing … so I hope to get him back.”

Cilic went on to crush Kei Nishikori in the Flushing Meadows final to capture his maiden grand slam final and advanced to his third consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final with another defeat of the Japanese superstar on Monday.

The 27-year-old once again fancies his chances of dashing Federer’s hopes of pushing for an elusive 18th major.

“I’m definitely playing well. That’s what I feel on the court,” Cilic said.

The victor will take on the winner of the second quarter-final from the top half of the draw between Djokovic’s third-round conqueror Sam Querrey and sixth seed Milos Raonic.

Like Federer, second-seeded championship favourite Andy Murray is wary of his quarter-final foe Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The French 12th seed is a four-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist and trying to reach the last four for a third time.

“I’m fully aware of how difficult my next opponent is as well. I know Tsonga is one of the best grasscourt players in the world,” Murray said.

“If he plays well, I’m not on my game, I can lose that match for sure.”

The fourth quarter-final involves 10th seed Tomas Berdych, runner-up in 2010 to Rafael Nadal, against France’s world No.30 Lucas Pouille.
