Second seed Fabio Fognini gets the better of world No.4 Juan Martin del Potro to walk away with his first ever ATP title on hard courts.

Fabio Fognini has defeated Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets to claim the ATP Tour 250 event in Los Cabos, Mexico.

The second-seeded Italian dominated the top seed 6-2 6-4 to win his eighth tour title – and first on hard courts.

Fognini, ranked 15th in the world, claimed the trophy for his third victory of the year, with the other two titles coming on clay in Bastad and Sao Paolo.

The 31-year-old lost the first three games against Argentine world No.4 del Potro before he stormed his way to four breaks of serve to win 12 of the last 15 games.

Del Potro, the 2009 US champion, had a 35-8 record coming into the final, winning this year on hard courts at Indian Wells and Acapulco.

Fognini, meanwhile, has won 18 of his last 23 matches and is projected to rise to world No.14 following his latest triumph.

“It’s something strange because, of course, at the beginning of the week if you told me that we would be talking about titles… I am really happy, happy about this week, about my game. Of course it means a lot for me,” Fognini told atpworldtour.com.
