Caroline Wozniacki is playing it cautious ahead of the US Open, withdrawing from this week’s WTA event in Washington DC due to a leg injury.

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki has withdrawn from this week’s Citi Open in Washington with a leg injury.

The Danish top seed picked up the injury during practice on Monday and pulled out ahead of her opening match against Ukrainian qualifier Anhelina Kalinina on Tuesday.

Wozniacki’s last match was a second-round defeat by Ekaterina Makarova at Wimbledon on 4 July.

Belgian lucky loser Ysaline Bonaventure steps into the draw, which is now headed by second seed and world No.3 Sloane Stephens.

The US Open champion began her campaign with a 7-5 6-4 win over fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Tuesday, setting up a second-round meeting with Germany’s Andrea Petkovic.

Japanese third seed Naomi Osaka saw off American Bernard Pera 6-2 7-6(4), Swiss sixth seed Belinda Bencic defeated Britain’s Harriet Dart 7-5 6-2, and Croatian seventh seed Donna Vekic beat Caroline Dolehide of the US 6-3 6-3.

The biggest upset of the day came with defending champion and fourth seed Makarova going down 7-6(2) 6-3 to Romania’s Ana Bogdan.
