Eugenie Bouchard headlines high-profile exits on day three of Roland Garros qualifying – but Bernard Tomic continues resurgence.

Former world No.5 Eugenie Bouchard’s French Open campaign is over.

The Canadian, now ranked No.167 and contesting qualifying at a Grand Slam for the first time since Australian Open 2013, retired while trailing Slovenian Dalila Jakupovic 0-6 1-2 in the first round.

Bouchard, who withdrew from an ITF tournament earlier this month with an abdominal injury, reportedly refused to answer questions about her injury after the match.

The result is bad news for Bouchard’s post-tournament ranking. A French Open semifinalist in 2014, the 24-year-old is at risk of tumbling outside the world’s top 200 for the first time since 2012.

The news is better for former world No.17 Bernard Tomic, whose ranking will receive a welcome boost after reaching the final round of French Open qualifying.

The 25-year-old Australian’s ranking is currently No.208, but he has now won six of his past seven matches to verge on a Grand Slam main draw return.

Tomic impressed in a 6-3 6-1 second round win over Brit Jay Clarke, hitting 24 winners in a 69-minute victory. It sets up a final qualifying round showdown with world No.221 Goncalo Oliveira, a 23-year-old from Portugal who had never won a Grand Slam-level match before this week.

Top-seeded Taro Daniel of Japan was a surprise casualty on day three of Roland Garros qualifying, with the world No.80 eliminated by world No.220-ranked Austrian Dennis Novak 4-6 6-1 6-0 in the second round.

The top seed in the women’s qualifying draw is also out, with 17-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu upsetting Vera Lapko 6-4 7-5 in the first round. The 19-year-old Belarusian had arrived in Paris on a 10-match winning streak, having won back-to-back ITF titles to rise to a career-high ranking of No.77 this week.
