Grigor Dimitrov’s lean season continues following a straight-sets loss to unseeded Jeremy Chardy at the Miami Open.

World No.4 Grigor Dimitrov slumped to his fourth defeat in five matches after a straight-sets loss to Jeremy Chardy on Sunday in Miami.

Chardy, the world No.90, needed only 84 minutes to send Dimitrov packing with a 6-4 6-4 victory at Crandon Park’s Stadium court.

The in-form Frenchman, a former No.25, has reached back-to-back fourth rounds at Indian Wells and Miami.

Dimitrov, who was stretched to three sets in his opening Miami match by 73rd-ranked Maximilian Marterer, has fallen early at all three of his events since reaching the Rotterdam final five weeks ago.

Chardy goes on to face Canada’s 20th seed Milos Raonic, who beat 13th seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 7-6(5), 6-3.

As Dimitrov struggled, fellow high seeds Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic progressed in straight sets.

Del Potro recorded his 13th straight victory with a 6-2 6-2 drubbing of Kei Nishikori, while Cilic saw off Vasek Pospisil 7-5 7-6(4).

Del Potro, who arrived in Miami following back-to-back titles in Acapulco and Indian Wells, next faces 22nd seed Filip Krajinovic, a 6-3 6-3 winner over Novak Djokovic’s conqueror Benoit Paire.

“I can play even better, but I need to get confidence playing on this court, trying to keep winning matches,” said Del Potro.

“But it is not easy. My body is starting to feel tight because of all my success.”

Cilic faces No.14 seed John Isner in the last 16, after the American beat Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets.

Also advancing to the fourth round were Hyeon Chung – who crushed qualifier Michael Mmoh 6-1 6-1 – and Joao Sousa.
