Jack Sock had just played half volley against Roger Federer at the ATP Finals that lofted far higher and landed far deeper than intended.
He knew he was out of the point.
So, as Federer sprinted up to the short ball to pounce on he putaway, the American bent over at the net in surrender.
And Federer missed a gimme of a forehand into the net.
“It was a big distraction, I’ll tell you that,” Federer said in press after going on to beat Sock 6-4 7-6(4).
“Because it was very big (laughter).
“And that’s what I should have aimed for. That target was bigger than the down-the-line corridor that I had.
“It’s happened sometimes in the past, but not on a big stage like this (laughter).”
