Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza is the WTA Player of the Year.

The 24-year-old Spaniard, who won her second career Grand Slam title and rose to world No.1 during the season, was crowned during a gala evening at the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Martina Hingis and Yung-Jan Chan were named the Doubles Team of the Year. The duo won nine titles together after teaming up for the first time in February, winning 49 of the 55 matches they played.

Other winners in the awards, which are voted for by international media, were:

Most Improved Player of the Year: Jelena Ostapenko

Comeback Player of the Year: Sloane Stephens

Newcomer of the Year: CiCi Bellis

Jerry Diamond ACES Award (For promoting the sport to fans, media and local communities): Angelique Kerber
