There were some happy winners – but world No.4 Karolina Pliskova was not one of them.

While Pliskova had a day to forget, for her opponent Sorana Cirstea it was a memorable one. The Romanian scored her first top-five win since 2013.

Jelena Ostapenko was only on court for 15 minutes, her opponent Peng Shuai retiring with a knee injury.

Rafael Nadal did it comfortably in his highly-anticipated second round clash with rising Russian Karen Khachanov.

A ‘very, very impressive’ John Isner awaits in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.

Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia is quarterfinal bound too, eliminating countrywoman Alize Cornet in straight sets.

World No.3 Elina Svitolina is her next opponent, advancing with a hard-fought 6-2 7-5 win over Elena Vesnina.

Rising star Andrey Rublev continued his breakthrough season, upsetting seventh seed and former finalist Tomas Berdych in a three-set battle.

A big-hitting Petra Kvitova left world No.6 Caroline Wozniacki shell-shocked:
