Retiring when match point down? Yep…

Here’s something that you don’t see everyday – and for good reason. Aleksandra Stevenson apparently decided to retire from her match against Viktorija Rajicic when she was match point down. Yes, you read that right.

The incident happened in qualifying for the ITF $25k in Toowoomba, Australia. Stevenson, who doesn’t appear to be carrying a particularly significant injury, decided to quit while trailing 1-6 6-4 5-4 (40-30) with Rajicic serving.

Think about that for a moment: rather than letting her opponent hit an ace (or, if that was too much to stomach, simply netting the return), the 36 year-old American chose to take away Rajicic’s claim to a legitimate win and pull the pin on the match.
