Laver Cup’s black court has added a new dimension to playing conditions at the inaugural competition.

One of the most striking traits of the Laver Cup is the introduction of a black court. As the two teams lined up in front of thousands of fans in Prague, the players took a little bit of time out of their schedules to discuss the court and its unique playing characteristics.

“It’s going to be interesting,” John Isner opined when asked about the court. “[I] haven’t played on it yet. Haven’t even practiced on it yet. But from everything our team has heard, it’s an extremely nice court.

“It will be a little bit different to get used to the optics of the black court, but I think after one or two days on practice, it will seem to all of us just like any other court.

“I think the black court is going to be very cool.”

Team Europe’s Rafael Nadal was another player yet to practice on the court. The world No.1, coming fresh off his victory at the US Open, is also making a return to serious hitting after having a couple of recovery weeks.

“ I am very looking forward to practice this afternoon and see how the court, how it plays, the court,” Nadal said. “Everybody told me that it is amazing, big stadium, and beautiful.

“I’m very excited to go there and see the facility, no? So I have today and tomorrow to practice hard.”
