Belgium fought back to down Australia, while France got the win they needed, as the two European powerhouses set up an intriguing Davis Cup final on French Soil.
With Australia leading Belgium 2-1 going into the final day of action, the momentum appeared to be on the side of the antipodeans. However, a stunning fightback from David Goffin levelled the tie, before Steve Darcis took the decisive rubber in straight sets to book a place in the Davis Cup final.
Nick Kyrgios briefly raised Aussie hopes when he took the opening set against Goffin. But the Belgian, who had not beaten Kyrgios in their three previous encounters, broke back at the beginning of the second and went on to level the match at one set all.
The second and third were similar affairs, with Goffin wrapping up the 6-7(4) 6-4 6-4 6-4 win with a massive ace down the ’T’.
“When he is playing at that level he is up there with the best in the world,” Kyrgios mused. “He served unbelievably well today. He was moving great, hitting great. He was too good.”
With the tie level, it came down to a straight shootout between Steve Darcis and Jordan Thompson for a place in the Davis Cup Final.
In what proved to be a frustrating day for Australia’s captain Lleyton Hewitt, world No.77 Darcis always had the edge as he came through 6-4 7-5 6-2.
If Belgium v Australia went down to the wire, France v Serbia did anything but. After Lucas Pouille’s shock defeat in Friday’s first singles rubber, it was left to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to wrap up proceedings against Dusan Lajovic.
As he has on plenty of occasions this season, Tsonga briefly wobbled before settling to secure a 2-6 6-2 7-6(5) 6-2 win.
“It was an exciting tie and the mindset was perfect,” France captain Yannick Noah said. “There were ups and downs but let’s enjoy it. Being in the final was a dream.”
