Conchita Martinez has expressed her disappointment and anger at being voted down as captain of Spain’s Davis Cup and Fed Cup captain.
Martinez, a former world No.2 and 1994 Wimbledon champion, helmed the Fed Cup team since 2013 and Davis Cup outfit since 2015.
She also guided new world No.1 Garbine Muguruza to this year’s Wimbledon title.
Yet the Spanish federation’s board of directors on Thursday unanimously decided to “make a change in the leadership.”
SHARAPOVA: critics don’t have the facts
Martinez fired back in a statement.
“I want to share my disappointment and discomfort with the Spanish federation. It is very ungrateful to take over the helm during a storm and then be taken away after you reach the calm,” she said.
“After all my contribution and dedication to Spanish tennis, I don’t think I deserved an ending like this, so disrespectful.”
Martinez had apparently wanted to stay in the role and said she had been looking forward to the ties ahead.
The Spanish Fed Cup team earlier this year fell out of the World Group after losing a playoff tie, and will feature in World Group II in 2018.
The Davis Cup team reached this year’s World Group quarterfinals.
