A fly came towards Sloane Stephens. She recoiled, squealed, and dived out of her chair onto the floor.
This was a US Open 2017 press conference, by which point the journalists in the room were laughing and the American star – the tournament’s eventual champion – was out of camera shot.
She got up, flinched some more, attempted to kill the insect with a shoe, shuddered and then tried to turn her attention back to the journalist – but had forgotten the question they’d asked.
