Garbine Muguruza will become the game’s newest world No.1 after top-ranked Karolina Pliskova fell in the US Open quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Pliskova’s 7-6(4) 6-3 loss to American CoCo Vandeweghe means that Muguruza will leapfrog the Czech to become No.1 when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday.
She becomes the 24th women in history – and second Spaniard, after Arantxa Sanchez Vicario – to reach the summit.
FEATURE: Muguruza has “learned” how to deal with success
Muguruza is the reigning Wimbledon and Cincinnati champion and since Rome, in May, has built a win-loss record of 28-7.
She fell to Petra Kvitova in the fourth round in New York.
N. 1
Very happy!! Believe. Dreams come true. Thanks all! Love you. https://t.co/JO4k6DixaC pic.twitter.com/1g7Y171PTK— Garbiñe Muguruza (@GarbiMuguruza) September 6, 2017
Pliskova first rose to world No.1 after Wimbledon and has held top spot for eight weeks; she needed to at least reach the final in Flushing Meadows to remain at the top.
But she found Vandeweghe too strong a prospect at Arthur Ashe Stadium; Vandeweghe joins Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens as the third American woman into the US Open semifinals.
Another American, Madison Keys, will look to make it a perfect four-from-four when she takes on Kaia Kanepi on Wednesday night.
In 2017, four women – Angelique Kerber, Serena Williams, Pliskova and now Muguruza – have held the No.1 ranking at some stage.
