Alexander Zverev has upset Roger Federer to win the Rogers Cup – his second ATP Masters 1000 title of the season.

Alexander Zverev has upset Roger Federer to win the Rogers Cup. The German took his winning streak to ten straight matches with a 6-3 6-4 win in just 68 minutes over Federer.

In a dominant performance, Zverev handed Federer just his third defeat of the season as he went on to claim his second title in as many weeks, and fifth of 2017.

Zverev was on top from the start, breaking early to lead 3-1 in the opener. Federer came close to levelling the match, but the 20 year-old held on to extend his lead to 5-3, before closing out the opening set in just 30 minutes.

Federer attempted to hit back quickly at the start of the second, the No.2 seed earning three break points in the opening game of the set. Zverev, however, was able to hold on under a barrage of pressure. The decisive moment came in the seventh game when Zverev pounced on a series of unforced Federer errors. Once he had the break he didn’t look back, as he marched towards title No.5 of 2017 (and his second Masters 1000 crown).

“This one against Roger is something so special for me because he was always a great idol growing up for me,” Zverev said after the win. “The greatest player of all time, beating him in a final, not just any final but in the final of a Masters 1000, is amazing.”

Zverev has now won ten matches in a row, and back to back titles for the first time in his career. He is joint leader for Tour titles with Federer in 2017 (five).

For Roger Federer, this was only his third defeat in 38 matches this year. He has also never won the Rogers Cup in Montreal (four titles in Toronto). The Swiss is still in contention for world No.1, which he will contest with Rafael Nadal at next week’s Cincinnati Masters.
