Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev produced some of the best quotes in an eventful week in tennis land.

Rafael Nadal was stony, Elina Svitolina was blunt, Maria Sharapova was jaw-dropping and Alex Zverev and Roger Federer shared a laugh …

Here are some of the best quotes from the past week in tennis.

“Obviously is a tough lose for me. Is a bad lose. Probably is the worst lose of the year we have, without a doubt, for me. Probably my worst loss of the year because I lost against a player with a lower ranking. At the same time because of the opportunity I had here to come back to the No.1 … So was an important mistake for me.”

Rafael Nadal, following his shock third-loss to 18-year-old wildcard Denis Shapovalov at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal.

“Mostly, I think she hated me for hearing her cry. Not long after the tournament, I heard that Serena told a friend – who then told me – ‘I will never lose to that little b…. again.'”

Maria Sharapova on her 2004 Wimbledon final victory over Serena Williams, as detailed in her forthcoming autobiography Unstoppable.

“I thought it was a fantastic match. It was exhilarating for the crowd, for the fans watching on TV, for Canadian tennis – that was cool to watch for I’m sure a lot of kids, that you can go beat your hero, if you train hard in your life.”

Roger Federer, on Denis Shapovalov’s upset victory over Rafael Nadal in Montreal.

“First of all, Roger watching my match, that’s an honour for me. Roger is my hero, he’s my idol. Just seeing him here in the locker room, I still, get shell-shocked.”

Denis Shapovalov returns the love to Roger Federer.

“I would think that I was playing much better in Dubai, even Roland Garros was better. But it’s a different situation. It’s a final. So you never know what is going to happen.”

Elina Svitolina in Toronto, which she went on to win with a 6-4 6-0 thrashing of Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

“I’m sorry you didn’t win Montreal this year (laughter). Hopefully you have many more years to come back here and I’m sure you’ll get it.”

– a giggling Alexander Zverev to an equally amused Roger Federer during the trophy presentation after beating Federer in the Montreal final. At 36 years of age Federer obviously doesn’t have that many more shots at a Coupe Rogers title (it heads back to Toronto in 2018 before returning to Montreal in 2019).
