It’s hard to think of a more gifted shotmaker than Gael Monfils. Admittedly, occasionally it comes in fits and starts. But when the mercurial Frenchman turns it on, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Staring down the barrel of a second round exit to Japan’s Kei Nishikori, Monfils stepped it up in quite exquisite fashion. Reeling off a series of sensational points, the Frenchman not only hauled himself back into the deciding set tiebreak, but went on to win the match 6-7(4) 7-5 7-6(6) as well.
