David Goffin battled into the second round of the Coupe Rogers in Montreal with a 4-6 6-1 6-3 win over Japan’s Yuichi Sugita on Tuesday.
Goffin, seeded No.9, held off the 46th-ranked Sugita in one hour, 44 minutes to move on at the Canadian Masters tournament.
Montreal is just Goffin’s third tournament since May’s French Open, where he retired in the third round after wrenching his ankle on the court covers stored at the back of the court when chasing down a shot.
WOODBRIDGE: why Federer and Nadal are back on top
He was forced to miss Wimbledon, and posted a lukewarm 2-2 record at comeback events in Umag and Gstaad in July.
The Belgian next faces Korean Hyeon Chung, who beat Feliciano Lopez in round one.
Also moving on was local young gun Denis Shapovalov; the 18-year-old wildcard saved four match points to beat Rogerio Dutra-Silva 4-6 7-6(8) 6-4.
Shapovalov will take on Juan Martin del Potro in an exciting second-round encounter.
Other seeds to advance were 11th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who recovered to beat Karen Khachanov 3-6 6-3 6-2, and No.15 seed Jack Sock, who saw off qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert in straight sets.
In a second-round match, young American Jared Donaldson beat a second straight Frenchman; his 6-2 7-5 win over Benoit Paire followed his opening-round upset of 13th seed Lucas Pouille.
Donaldson awaits the winner of the match between Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman.
