Alexander Zverev captured his first outdoor hard court title with a straight sets win over Kevin Anderson at the Citi Open.

Alexander Zverev has won his first ATP outdoor hard court title with a straight sets win over Kevin Anderson. Zverev needed just one hour nine minutes to wrap up the 6-4 6-4 victory, capping off an impressive week for the 20 year-old.

In a straightforward match for the Next Gen star, a single break in either set was enough to secure the victory for Zverev.

It was a businesslike end to an impressive week for the German, who lost just a single set (Thompson 1R) during the four matches that he played. As he settled into the tournament Zverev looked increasingly confident, brushing aside the likes of Kei Nishikori and fellow Next Gen star Danil Medvedev en route to the title – his fourth of the year.

“It was a great match,” Zverev said after the win. “I felt unbelievable starting from the quarter-finals and from then it got better and better every match I played.”

Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives for Kevin Anderson in Washington. The South African was playing in his first ATP final in two years, after spending 18 months on the sidelines with injury.

“I think I can take a ton of positives from this week, and I’ve been able to do that for the past few tournaments. That’s definitely a big encouragement for me,” Anderson told the ATP. “I played some of my best tennis here. I feel like some of the stuff I’ve been working on is really starting to shine through more and more on the match court.”
