One of the world’s top umpires, Carlos Bernardes, found himself battling a couple of raucous spectators and an irritable Damir Dzumhur in the opening round of Los Cabos. The Brazilian umpire was forced to reprimand the spectators in the opening set of the match, asking them to stop cheering Taro Daniel’s errors and reminding them that they were watching “tennis, not football”.
However, rather than applaud the umpire for trying to control the crowd, Bernardes’ intervention triggered a series of recriminations from Dzumhur.

The Bosnian, who appeared generally disgruntled throughout the match, berated Bernardes for line calls, interruptions, and generally doing his job. However, the Brazilian maintained his composure throughout, and guided the match to a safe conclusion wit Dzumhur getting the 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3 win.
