With five ATP and WTA finals unfolding on Sunday, there were highs and lows for the combatants involved. We wrap up the last day of action from the many tournaments being staged across the globe.
The stat coming into this final was that Caroline Wozniacki was an unenviable 0-4 in WTA finals this season. And Katerina Siniakova ensured more heartache after administering a straight-sets defeat for the Dane in the Bastad decider. In an injury plagued final – Wozniacki struggled with a left wrist problem, Siniakova a right tricep complaint – the young Czech won her second title of 2017 with a 6-3 6-4 win over the top seed.
“It’s really amazing for me,” said Siniakova, who also reached the final in Bastad in 2016. “Last year was really good, and so I’m so happy that I came back because I couldn’t imagine a better week.”

John Isner doesn’t lose very often in the United States. The American, seeded second in Atlanta, overcame compatriot Ryan Harrison 7-6(6) 7-6(7) in a one-hour, 47-minute final that delivered Isner his fourth Atlanta title in his fifth straight final in the Georgian city. Of his 12 career titles, 10 have come on home soil, as have 20 of his 24 ATP finals. The world No.20 – who is riding an eight-match winning streak – will move up to world No.18 and will reclaim to the No.1 US ranking.

Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer beat German Florian Mayer to take home his second trophy at the ATP 500 claycourt event in Hamburg. The lucky loser won 6-4 4-6 6-3 in a touch under two hours, belting 44 winners in a masterful performance. “It’s amazing to win in Hamburg again. It’s like home here and I feel very comfortable. I like the city and I always play well here,” said Mayer, who also won the title in 2014. “It’s something special about this sport. I lost in qualifying and then beat the No.1 seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round. It also happened last week in Umag with Rublev. Now I took the opportunity.”
Italy’s Fabio Fognini won his first title of the season with a 6-4 7-5 win over little-known qualifier Yannick Hanfmann. The German had enjoyed a stellar week and even saved four match points in the semis to reach his first ATP final, but found the fourth seed too strong in the Swiss Alps. “It’s always a good feeling when you win,” Fognini said. “Our job is winning matches and of course I’m happy with this. It was a really tough week for me… This is the first title as a father, so it’s something different and special.”

With 16 Chinese players occupying the 32 slots in the Nanchang draw, you would think the chances of a home-grown winner would be fairly high. Peng Shuai ensured that was the case, defeating Japan’s Nao Hibino 6-3 6-2 to claim her second WTA title – and second in China, after winning in Tianjin last year. The second seed dropped just one set all week, against Kurumi Nara in the first round. “I’m so happy to get my second WTA title,” Peng said. I’d like to thank myself, because I didn’t give up, and I also appreciate the people who were supporting me after I finished my surgery. It was my first time playing against her, I was a little bit nervous today, but I played better and better since the third game. I played well, and my strategy worked out today.”
