ATP / WTA wrap: Isner, Wozniacki march on

It was a good day for top seeds John Isner and Caroline Wozniacki, but David Goffin crashed in Gstaad.

John Isner remains on course for his fourth Atlanta Open title, Caroline Wozniacki is chasing down her maiden Bastad crown, but David Goffin crashed out in Gstaad. This is the ATP and WTA wrap.

ATP Atlanta: Isner eases into semifinals

John Isner’s hopes of securing a fourth title in five years at the Atlanta Open are alive and kicking after the giant American out-gunned Lukas Lacko in straight sets. Isner thumped down 13 aces en route to his 7-5 6-4 win.

In what promises to be a big-serving masterclass, Isner will take on Gilles Muller in the semis. The Luxembourg native walloped down 17 aces in his win 6-3 6-1 win over Tommy Paul.

In the day’s other quarterfinal, Ryan Harrison was a comfortable 6-1 6-2 winner over Christopher Eubanks.

WTA Bastad: Wozniacki on course for title

Caroline Wozniacki is clicking into gear at the Ericsson Open. The top seed and world No.7 needed little over an hour to book her spot in the semifinals with a 6-3 6-1 win over Kateryna Kozlova.

Elsewhere, Caroline Garcia was forced to dig deep during her 6-2 4-6 7-5 win over Barbora Krejcikova; Elise Mertens was a 6-4 2-6 6-4 winner over Aleksandra Krunic; and Katerina Siniakova ousted second seed Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 5-7 7-5.

ATP Hamburg: An unlikely semifinal quartet

With the defeat of the two remaining seeds left in the draw, the semifinals in Hamburg took ‘unusual’ shape. Karen Khachanov was the first to go, beaten 7-5 3-6 6-4 by world No.81 (and former finalist) Federico Delbonis, and then Jiri Vesely went the same way, ousted by 2014 champion Leonardo Mayer 7-6(4) 6-3.

There were a couple of good results for the German fans, with Florian Mayer beating Diego Schwartzman 6-2 3-6 6-3; while Philipp Kohlschreiber was a 7-6(6) 4-6 6-4 winner over Nicolas Kicker.

WTA Nanchang: Home favourites dominate

Japan’s Nao Hibino is the only non-Chinese player to make the last four of the Jiangxi Open. Hibino, ranked 88 in the world, downed qualifier Jing-Jing Lu 6-2 6-3.

The highest seed remaining in the draw, Peng Shuai, needed more than 90 minutes to battle past Lin Zhu 7-6(2) 6-0. Elsewhere, Xinyun Han was a 6-1 7-5 winner over Australia’s Arina Rodionova, and wildcard Yafan Wang downed Su-Wei Hsieh 7-6(7) 6-0.

ATP Gstaad: Goffin crashes out

David Goffin’s return to action ended prematurely, the top seeded Belgian beaten 7-5 6-1 by Robin Haase. It wasn’t all bad news for the seeds, though, with wildcard Fabio Fognini battling past Ernests Gulbis 6-3 4-6 6-3, and Roberto Bautista Agut beating Denis Istomin 6-3 6-4. In the days other result, qualifier Yannick Hanfmann was a 6-7(10) 6-2 6-2 winner over Joao Sousa.
