Caroline Wozniacki battled through her opening match in Bastad, but over in Hamburg the top two seeds crashed out.

While rain interrupted play on a bad day for the seeds in Hamburg, there were no such problems in Bastad as the WTA event burst into life. We wrap up the best of Tuesday’s results.

WTA Bastad: Wozniacki stutters, Bertens cruises

Admittedly, Caroline Wozniacki could have drawn easier first round opponents than Pauline Parmentier. However, few expected the top seed to be pushed to three sets in a topsy turvey 6-3 3-6 6-2 win.

There were no such problems for fifth and sixth seeds Carla Suarez Navarro and Kiki Bertens. Suarez Navarro dismissed Jasmine Paolini 6-0 6-1 in just 50 minutes, while Bertens was a 6-1 6-4 winner over Carina Witthoeft. Elsewhere, Caroline Garcia was a winner in three, home favourite Johanna Larsson was downed in three, and Julia Goerges was forced to retire from her match against Viktoriya Tomova.

ATP Hamburg: Ramos-Vinolas stunned

Hamburg lost its two top seeds on Tuesday, with both Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Pablo Cuevas crashing out in their opening matches. After a stellar start to 2017, Albert Ramos-Vinolas’ struggle with form continued, the Spaniard downed 6-7(3) 6-3 7-6(4) by Lucky Loser Leonardo Mayer. Meanwhile, second seed Cuevas was beaten 3-6 7-5 6-4 by Andrey Kuznetsov.

Elsewhere on the rain-interrupted day, Karen Khachanov was a 6-4 6-3 winner over Rudolf Molleker, and Nicolas Kicker beat Tommy Haas 7-5 6-2.

WTA Nanchang: Jankovic grabs rare win

It’s been a rocky season for sixth seed Jelena Jankovic, but the Serb fought hard to secure a 6-2 7-5 win over Jiaqi Kang at the Jiangxi Open. Elsewhere, Arina Rodionova was a 7-5 6-4 winner over Ying-Ying Duan, while qualifier Jing-Jing Lu upset Zarina Diyas 6-3 1-6 7-6(6).

ATP Atlanta: Home favourites struggle

There was no shortage of Americans in the first round of the Atlanta Open, but their numbers have dwindled going into round two. Kyle Edmund started the day with a comfortable 6-3 7-5 win over Marcos Baghdatis. Then the home favourites began to struggle.

Malek Jaziri got the better of Reilly Opelka 5-7 7-6(14) 6-1, Vasek Pospisil downed Bjorn Fratangelo 7-5 4-6 7-6(3), and John Millman was a 5-7 6-4 7-6(5) winner over Frances Tiafoe. There was some good news on the home front: Donald Young got the better of fellow countryman Tim Smyczek 6-4 6-2.

ATP Gstaad: Mixed day for the seeds

It may have been a relatively quiet day in Gstaad, but the tournament enjoyed its fair share of drama. Robin Haase was a comfortable 6-1 6-4 winner over Renzo Olivo, and Joao Sousa made short work of Santiago Giraldo in his 6-3 6-3 win. But it wasn’t all plain-sailing for the big names. Alexandr Dolgopolov crashed out in three to Thiago Monteiro, Dustin Brown got the better of Dusan Lajovic, and Radu Albot won a 4-6 7-6(6) 7-5 epic against Mikhail Youzhny that finished just shy of three hours.
