In the women’s game, who do you love watching right now?
That was the question posed to Sam Stosur when she appeared on SEN Radio’s The First Serve on Sunday night.
Stosur has had more time than usual to watch the game; the Australian has been sidelined with a right-hand stress fracture since Roland Garros, which has taken longer than anticipated to heal.
She said there were a variety of styles that captured her interest.
“I do actually quite enjoy watching (Petra) Kvitova play,” Stosur said.
“She plays super aggressive and it can be great tennis and then other times she’ll make a few errors and then (it’s about) how she can kind of bring it back in and get it back on. When she’s playing great, she’s very good.
“And Serena, you can’t really argue with the fact that she’s probably the best player ever.
“I think there’s certain players I’d enjoy more because I can kind of understand their tennis a little bit more, like a (Svetlana) Kuznetsova, someone like that who plays with a bit more spin, uses weapons a bit more similar to myself and I can kind of maybe watch someone like her and appreciate what she’s trying to do a little bit more and set things up and get where she’s coming from.
“It’s also good to watch other players where you don’t necessarily play like them at all and try and learn how they maybe don’t have the biggest groundstrokes but can move well or anticipate really well. And then you’ve obviously got the big hitters.
“So I think there’s all different kind of styles in there that I actually quite enjoy watching, and then I also probably look at them to see what they’re trying to do and then how I can compete with that and what would I do when I’m playing them.”
