According to a story in Sportski Zurnal, Serbian doctor Zdenko Milinkovic said the problem could keep the 12-time major champion off court for six to 12 weeks, which would see him miss the US Open and all but end his 2017 season.

Djokovic trailed Tomas Berdych 7-6(2) 2-0 when he retired from their Wimbledon quarterfinal, having received treatment for the problem during the match.
He also received treatment for what appeared to be the same problem during the 2016 US Open.
He revealed at Wimbledon he’d been battling the problem “on and off” for the past year and a half.
