It was a tough day for the seeds in the tennis world, although some (like John Isner) held on.

It was a bad day to be a seed on the ATP, with ‘big’ players dropping like flies around the world. The top names fared marginally better on the WTA, but there were still some prominent casualties.

ATP Newport: Isner marches into semis

Top seed John Isner marched into the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Open, with a 6-4 6-4 win over Dennis Novikov. Isner, the only seed left in the draw, will face fellow American Bjorn Fratangelo, who was a 6-2 5-7 6-4 winner over Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

WTA Bucharest: Sevastova stunned

Anastasija Sevastova crashed out of the Bucharest Open, beaten 6-1 6-3 by home favourite Ana Bogdan. On what turned out to be a good day for the Romanian’s on home soil, Irina-Cemelia Begu also booked a spot in the semifinals with a 7-5 6-0 win over Pauline Parmentier.

Elsewhere, Carla Suarez Navarro was a 6-0 6-3 winner over Tatjana Maria, and Julia Goerges downed Dulgheru 7-5 7-5.

ATP Umag: Seeds fall at Croatia Open

It was a bad day for the seeds at the Croatia Open, with Paolo Lorenzi the only top-eight player remaining in the competition. Top seed David Goffin was downed 7-5 6-3 by wildcard Ivan Dodig, before defending champion Fabio Fognini was ousted 6-7(5) 6-2 7-6(2) by Andrey Rublev.

On the other side of the draw, Lorenzi beat Jiri Vesely 1-6 7-5 6-3, and Alessandra Giannessi was a 6-7(3) 6-2 7-5 winner over Rogeria Dutra Silva.

Anett Kontaveit made sure that there are two seeds remaining in the draw with a 6-2 6-4 win over Carina Witthoeft.

ATP Bastad: Ferrer battles through

David Ferrer continued his march towards the Bastad title, the eighth seed downing Swiss Henri Laaksonen 7-5 3-6 7-6(3).
