On a topsy turvey day across the ATP and WTA Tours, both Caroline Garcia and Gael Monfils crashed out in their opening matches, while Fabio Fognini started the defence of his Umag title in style.
Defending champion Fabio Fognini got his campaign off to a solid start with a 6-4 1-6 6-2 win over Nicolas Kicker. He will play Lucky Loser Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinal, the Russian beating Andrej Martin 7-6(5) 7-5.
Elsewhere, it was a tough day for second seed Gael Monfils, the Frenchman stunned in his opening match by Rogerio Dutra Silva 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3.
Top seed Caroline Garcia suffered a surprise second round exit against world No.40 Tereza Martincova. The Frenchwoman was beaten 7-5 7-6(1) in exactly two hours, leaving the draw wide open.

There were no such problems for second seed Kiki Bertens, who was a 6-4 6-2 winner over Anna Zaja. Elsewhere. Antonia Lottner put an end to Patty Schnyder’s run with a 7-6(0) 2-6 6-3 win, and Johanna Larsson was a 1-6 7-5 6-1 winner over Barbara Haas.
Second seed Ivo Karlovic crashed out in the quarterfinal of Newport, beaten 7-6(5) 6-7(1) 7-6(4) by German Peter Gojowczyk. As the scoreline suggests, there were no breaks of serve in a match that last two hours 26 minutes.
In the day’s other quarterfinal, Matt Ebden achieved a career-best result, advancing to the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Open with a 4-6 7-6(4) 6-4 win over Tobias Kamke.
Qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru wowed her home fans in Bucharest with a second round win over ninth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Romanian needed two hours 28 minutes to down the Russian 6-4 4-6 6-2. Meanwhile Irina-Camelia Begu was a 6-4 6-0 winner over fellow-Romanian Jaqueline Cristian.

In other results, Pauline Parmentier was a 3-6 6-4 6-4 winner over Elise Mertens, and Nadia Podoroska was forced to withdraw while trailing Tatjana Maria 1-4.
It might have been a late start to the second round in Bastad, but that didn’t phase Albert Ramos-Vinolas as he got off to a flying start. The Spaniard downed Thiago Monteiro 3-6 6-4 6-3 in little over two hours.
In what turned out to be a decent day for the seeds Karen Khachanov fought back against a fiery Ernests Gulbis to win 4-6 7-6(5) 6-3, and Fernando Verdasco was a 6-3 6-2 winner over Facundo Bagnis.
