It’s been a busy day of ATP and WTA action around the world, but amidst it all one story stands out: the return of David Goffin to competitive action.
David Goffin’s miraculous return from the nasty injury that ended his French Open campaign (and wiped him out for the grass court season) gathered momentum with a 6-4 6-7(6) 6-2 win over qualifier Attila Balazs.
Meanwhile, wildcard Ivan Dodig continued his run in Umag with a hard fought 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2 win over Marco Cecchinato, and Paolo Lorenzi was a 7-5 6-3 winner over Aljaz Bedene.
DID YOU SEE? Roger Federer – an irresistible storyline
Top seed Anastasija Sevastova carried her good form into the second round of the Bucharest Open, downing Danka Kovinic in one hour 27 minutes. The Latvian, who is looking to bounce back after a torrid time on the grass, won 6-4 6-4.
Second seed Carla Suarez Navarro was similarly emphatic, as she dispatched wildcard Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3 6-4 in near identical time. Elsewhere, Carla Buyukakcay was beaten 6-4 7-5 by Ana Bogdan, and Julia Goerges was a 7-6(4) 6-3 winner over Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
John Isner has eased into the third round of the Hall of Fame Open, downing fellow big gun Sam Groth 6-2 6-4 in little over an hour. Top seed Isner overwhelmed his opponent, crunching down 13 aces to Groth’s six.
In other results, second seed Ivo Karlovic was a 6-4 6-4 winner over Denis Kudla; Pierre-Hugues Herbert downed Menendez-Maceiras 7-5 2-6 6-3; and Matt Ebden was a 6-1 7-6(2) winner over Lukas Lacko.

She might be one of the form players of the WTA in recent weeks, but Anett Kontaveit was forced to dig deep as she battled past qualifier Anna Kalinskaya 6-4 4-6 6-4. Meanwhile, Carina Witthoeft fought back to down Sramkova 2-6 6-2 6-2, and Tamara Korpatch was a 5-7 6-3 6-0 winner over Maria Sakkari.
After a torrid grass court season, Pablo Carreno Busta’s woes continued when he was forced to retire against Andrey Kuznetsov. Busta served for the match in the second but began to struggle as Kuznetsov hit back, the Spaniard retiring at 4-6 7-6(5) 3-0.
The top seed might be out, but the tournament’s most famous Spaniard marches on. David Ferrer made short work of Dustin Brown, winning 6-2 6-3.
