The US Open has announced a record prize purse in 2017, with more than $50 million up for grabs.

The US Open will once again offer the richest prize purse in tennis, with more than $50 million up for grabs across the singles and doubles competition.

The USTA, organisers of the event at Flushing Meadows, announced a 9% increase in prize money in 2017, taking the total to $50.4 million total.

The winners of men’s and women’s singles will receive $3.7 million, with the beaten finalists receiving $1.82million each. Doubles winners will receive $675,000, with the runners-up picking up $340,000.

While the main draw players undoubtedly benefit, the largest increase will be realised by players in qualifying. The prize purse at the lower end of the game will top $2.9million, up a massive 49% on 2016.

“Five years ago, we committed to the players that total player compensation for players would reach $50 million at the US Open, and we are honouring that commitment,” Katrina Adams, USTA Chairman of the Board and President, opined.

The US Open consistently offers the biggest prize purse in the sport. By comparison, the total Wimbledon prize purse in 2017 stood at £31.6 million / US$41.2 million, the French Open offered €36 million / US$41.5 million, and the Australian Open offered AU$50 million / US$39.6 million.

The US Open begins on August 28th, with qualifying set to start on the 22nd. Stan Wawrinka and Angelique Kerber are the defending champions.
