After losing his one and only grasscourt match this season last week in Stuttgart to Tommy Haas, Roger Federer was in a ruthless mood against Yuichi Sugita in Halle.

Roger Federer needed just 52 minutes to banish Japanese lucky loser Yuichi Sugita from the first round of the ATP event in Halle on Tuesday.

Having lost his one and only grasscourt match of 2017 to Tommy Haas last week in Stuttgart, Federer was in no mood to permit a similar turn of events against Sugita.

The rapid-fire 6-3 6-1 win sets up a second-round stoush with Germany’s Mischa Zverev.

“I had never played him. And playing against me, all are always very motivated. That doesn’t make it easy but I’m very satisfied,” Federer said.

The victory over Sugita was Federer’s 1100th of his career; he notched up his 1000th win at the Brisbane International in 2015.
