Croatian Donna Vekic has stunned local hope Johanna Konta to win Nottingham.

Vekic, the world No.70, scored the second top-10 victory of her career to upset world No.8 Johanna Konta 2-6 7-6(3) 7-5 in a two hour, 29-minute final.

Konta, aiming to become the first British woman to win a grass court title at home since 1975, was in control of the match early before Vekic staged an impressive comeback.

“To be honest, I really, really didn’t expect to win today,” Vekic said. “I was just hoping to get into the match, especially after the first set. As my serve improved, my return games improved as well. I’m happy I turned that second set around and I just kept playing better and better until the end.”

It marked the 20-year-old Vekic’s second WTA singles title, and first since 2014.

“This is something I’ve been dreaming of since I won my last title…there’s no way to describe it, and it’s something that keeps me motivated to work even harder,” she said.

Kontaveit claims first title

Estonian Anett Kontaveit has continued her stunning rise, winning her first WTA title in s-Hertogenbosch.

The 21-year-old recorded a 6-2 6-3 victory over first-time finalist Natalia Vikhlyantseva, a 20-year-old from Russia.

“I’m so thrilled and happy, and really, really proud to win this title,” Kontaveit said. “I’ve been trying to keep low expectations, just to take it match by match and not thinking of the result so much. I’m working really hard and I think it’s a result of that and I’m really happy with how I’m improving and how things are working out right now.”

Kontaveit, who was ranked No.125 in early March, rises to a new career-high ranking of No.36 with the title.
