John McEnroe has accused Novak Djokovic of ‘giving up’ during his quarterfinal clash with Dominic Thiem at the French Open.
McEnroe was speaking after defending champion Djokovic was beaten 7-6(5) 6-3 6-0 by the Austrian sixth seed.
“Inexplicable,” McEnroe told the BBC. “I don’t recall seeing a time in the last six to eight years when Novak ‘mailed it in’. He basically gave up.

“He just didn’t want to be out there and couldn’t compete anymore. It’s shocking for a guy who has won as much as he has and prides himself on competition. It just shows that everyone is human.”
McEnroe was referring in particular to Djokovic’s third set capitulation against Thiem. Djokovic won just eight points during the 20-minute set, his first bagel set since 2005.
“If you would have told me a year ago, when he was the only guy since Rod Laver to hold all four Slams, that this is what we would be talking about then I would have told you that you are nuts,” McEnroe continued.
“I can’t believe that he seems so lost right now compared to what we saw when he was on top of the world.”
Following his defeat to Dominic Thiem, Djokovic is projected to slip to No.3 in the world, with Rafael Nadal rising to No.2.
