Elina Svitolina is currently the world No.6. She also heads the WTA Race to Singapore as the player who has earned the most ranking points so far in season 2017.
But at the games’s biggest events – the four Grand Slams – the Ukrainian has flopped.
In the past 12 months Svitolina has failed to pass the fourth round at any, and only once advanced to the second week of a major. That was at Roland Garros last year where she reached the last 16.
A victory in Rome last week was an encouraging sign – it marked the biggest and most prestigious title of her career so far. It could be the sign of more to come and perhaps the confidence boost she needs to replicate this result at a Grand Slam tournament.

But when we ranked players on points accrued at the four majors alone, Svitolina sits at No.27 on the list.
The 22-year-old is not the only player who’s current ATP or WTA ranking does little to reflect performance on the game’s grandest stages.
Johanna Konta, the world No.8, comes in at a lower mark of No.19 on our Grand Slam rankings. Ditto Dominika Cibulkova, the seventh-ranked Slovak who is 14th on our list. On the men’s side, Marin Cilic, the world No.8, is the 17th-best performed player at Grand Slam tournaments, reaching a quarterfinal at Wimbledon and falling earlier elsewhere.
On the other hand, several players have performed at a level well above what their ATP and WTA ranking indicates when they arrive at a Grand Slam venue.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the world No.17, is sixth on our list after reaching quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the past year. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych, ranked 13th and 14th, sit at No.8 and No.9 respectively in our Grand Slam rankings; Tsonga in particular has shown impressive consistency at the last four majors, reaching three quarterfinals.
Taking into account points earned solely at the past four Grand Slam events, here is the men’s and women’s top 10 in our Grand Slam rankings from the past 12 months.
