Roger Federer brushed aside the challenge of Juan Martin del Potro in the third round of the Miami Open. Federer, who is yet to lose a set in this North American hard court swing, overpowered the big Argentine in the 6-3 6-4 victory.
In front of a packed Centre Court crowd, the two-time champion (2005 and 2006) rarely looked threatened.
In a tight opening set, the No.4 seed saw two break points come and go at 3-2. However, at the next opportunity Federer broke to take a tight opening set.
The second was much like the first, with the Swiss star working hard to keep the ball away from the Argentine’s forehand, and attacking when the opportunity presented itself. One break was all that he needed to secure the match, and he served out the win in one hour 22 minutes.
It was Federer’s fifteenth win of the year (one defeat), and his sixteenth against del Potro (five defeats).
“It was a good match overall,” Federer said after the win. “I enjoyed it.”
Federer faces No.14 seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the fourth round.
