Caroline Wozniacki was in equally-inspired form. The Danish No.12 seed needed little more than an hour to dispatch American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko 6-1 6-2.
Slovakian fourth seed Dominika Cibulkova beat Paraguayan qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg 6-3 6-2 to set up a third-round clash with Belgian Kirsten Flipkens, who outlasted 29th-seeded Croatian Ana Konjuh 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (6-8) 6-2.
Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-0, 26th-seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni defeated Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7-2), China’s Zhang Shuai advanced past Italy’s Sara Errani 4-6 6-4 7-5 and Yulia Putintseva easd past Carina Witthoeft (Germany) 6-4 6-4.
Meanwhile, Daria Gavrilova crashed out of the tournament, beaten 6-2 6-2 by world No.36 Lucie Safarova on Thursday.
